Conventions of film websites

Movie websites are used as a way to engage the audience with the film and to attract a wider audience as the website is accessible anywhere in the world. The website can also act as a platform where the audience can get more information about the film.

There are clear differences in design of websites when comparing genre, for example a rom-com would have a bright website while other genres such as action, sci-fi or horror would have a much more aggressive aesthetic and use darker colours as the theme for the website.

The trailer would usually be one of the first things that the audience sees when they arrive at the website. Alternatively, the trailer could just pop up when the viewer first clicks on the website.

There are then navigation options such as the menu bar which make it simple and quick for the audience to find their seat.

Website logo
The logo section of the website will commonly be the space for identifying the production company. This image or text is often linked to the website main page, often known as “home”.

Header
The header is the top portion of the website, often containing the website logo as well as the main menu. The header is often a permanent fixture of the website, where the main content might scroll beneath it. The header contains information that is important to website navigation.

Menu
Menus provide a way to navigate the website easily. A main menu is often contained in the header, or on a drop down menu and allows navigation through the pages of the website.

Body
The body area of a website is the area of the website that contains the most content. There are a number of different kinds of content. Specific pages will contain specific content. The home page depicted contains examples of these types of content in ways that would be displayed on a home page.

Sidebar
While many modern websites with flat design elements frame the body content within the full width of the website, sidebars are very common website elements that haven’t disappeared entirely. Sidebars, like menus, often help with navigation.

Posts and feed content
A useful way to get visitors to your website engaging with the content on your website is by offering a “feed” of content and viewers can even subscribe.

Footer
The footer is the conclusion of the website. Typically, the footer will contain important links on the website, or, sometimes, links to all of the pages of the website. A copyright and date stamp is common here. To protect the information on your website and let visitors know when your website was last updated.

Social links
Social media links are a popular addition to most websites and are predominantly shown in the footer of the website.
A social media presence is essential to creating and maintaining a brand.
