Conventions from all types of trailers

  1. Production company logos shown at the start of the trailer. In longer trailers they may be the animated version of the logos whereas in shorter trailers they may be the version shown as a still image.
  2. Every movie trailer contains the title of that movie generally in a specially chosen font that is used in all marketing material associated with the movie.
  3. All films will have some form of release date shown near the end of the trailer, either an actual date or something less precise in the trailers released a long time before the movie as they do not yet know when it will be ready but have a rough idea so they can give a season.
  4. Obviously, the aim of all trailers is to introduce the characters and engage the audience so much that they want to go and see the actual movie.
  5. Every trailer features music whether is it diegetic or non diegetic (generally non diegetic)
  6. Voice overs are also a common feature in trailers as they are a useful tool for telling a story and getting a lot of information to the viewer without showing them a large number of scenes from the movie.
  7. If a movie has any famous cast members in it then the trailer will capitalise on this and show and famous names throughout the trailer with the hope that this will push move people to go and see the movie.
  8. Trailers can be any length of time but generally are no shorter than thirty seconds and no longer than two minutes and thirty seconds.
  9. Many new films also feature social media links telling the viewer where they can find out more information about the movie online.
  10. As well as all of these conventions, trailers also also used simply to establish the location.
  11. Characters relationships between one another are established
  12. There is often a problem outlined in the trailer which is not solved but rather reaches a climax by the end of the trailer.
